The Hexi Corridor sector of the Silk Road, located in the prime location of the Silk Road economic belt, is one of the earliest and representative areas of oasis agriculture in the northwest China. Because of the endless cycles between reclamation and abandonment in the past 2000 years, the areas and the locations changed sharply. Most notably, the fast extension during the past nearly 60 years had caused serious ecological problems. With the support of GIS technology, this project attempt to utilize historical document, archaeological material, historical map and remote-sensing images comprehensively, to rebuild the historic temporal-spatial patterns of oasis development and utilization from Han dynasty. Then combined with the changes of the Silk Road, its influence on the oasis development was discussed. With the help of automatic extraction and inversion technique, and combined with the field investigation, the spatial-temporal patterns in the past 60 years will be reconstructed accurately on the scale no less than 1:100000 and time interval of 3-5 years on the basis of temporal remote sensing images. Meanwhile, the changes of human landscape, such as reservoir channels, urban and rural settlements will be focused and studied. Quantitative analysis on the change characteristics of natural and artificial oases will be conducted respectively by using the temporal-spatial change model. Finally, the main ecological consequences caused by the oasis development will be illustrated, and the driving mechanism of oasis development will be revealed. This study has profound significance to Hexi Corridor in the aspects of ecological civilization construction and joining the Silk Road economic belt.
