社交机器人是一种自主机器人，能够遵循符合自己身份的社交行为和规范，与人类或其他自主的实体进行互动与沟通。这个定义意味着社交机器人必须有实在的形体（不能只是屏幕上的角色）。近来发展的机器人，有些是用屏幕显示机器人的头。这种机器人处于合格边缘，如果躯干的功能只是为了放置屏幕，就不算是机器人。但是如果这类的机器人具备机动性，并且有感应的功能，这种系统就可以视为机器人。
